Self-Publishing is not a Get Rich Quick Scheme

There is no fairy tale, get rich quick way to go about publishing your book. It just isn’t going to happen. Like the old saying anything that is worth anything is worth working hard for. Anyone can take a story, put it into words and publish it into a book, this doesn’t mean its good and it doesn’t make them an author. There is a lot of hard work in writing and publishing a book.

Publishing houses are in business to make money, this is a fact you will be further ahead by replicating. The best way to become successful with your book is to treat it as a business and be able to make rational business decisions for the benefit of your book and your bottom line.

Build it and They Will Come

Even though it would be great to have a bundle of cash to throw behind your self-published book, most authors who are just starting out don’t have the luxury of extra cash. Luckily there several things you can do to get the word out about your book that won’t take a lot of cash.

An excellent and inexpensive way to promote your book is to set up an author website for yourself. Domain name registration and website hosting are both very inexpensive these days. Do your research some sites will offer you free website hosting but for what you need your best bet is to go with a site that offers affordable hosting.

The reason for this is some of the free sites don’t offer the ecommerce tools you’ll need to sell your book, like a shopping cart. You also won’t be able to register your own domain name with a free site which makes it easier for  people to find you and your book.

Once you have your site up and running you can add a bio about yourself and a description of your book along with a free look at a couple of chapters to get your future readers interested. Another benefit of having a website dedicated to yourself and your book is whenever you post to a blog, group or anywhere else on the internet you can include a link to your website in your signature so you can direct as many people as possible to the site, hopefully converting them into buyers.

Find Your Niche

“You can’t please all of the people all of the time”, this phrase was never more accurate then it is when it comes to marketing your self-published book. When it comes time to market your book you need to target a very select group and only when you have that market saturated can you start testing the waters by casting your net further.

Say you are writing a detective novel. You want to search out where mystery and detective book readers hang out, meaning the blogs and groups they frequent. Join these groups and contribute to them often. I’m not saying your sole intent should be advertising your book, I’m saying you should join the discussions and become a valued and respected contributor.

If you did write a detective novel I’m assuming that you did thorough research on the subject so you will be able to add to the conversation.

Signatures are a very powerful tool, so every time you sign your name at the bottom of your post you will want to include the fact that you are a published detective novelist.

If your participation in the group is productive and accepted then it will be a good bet that people in the group will see you as a person who knows a thing or two about the topic and they will want to hear more of what you have to say by giving your book a read. If your book is as good as you believe, word of mouth will travel fast and you will have your fan base.

The number of books that have been self published annually in the U.S. has nearly tripled since 2006 and the industry is expected to continue its monumental rise in popularity. What this means to the public is not only do aspiring authors now have the ability to take a chance on their talent, but it also means that book lovers now have more choices and the ability to read the works of some truly excellent authors. An experience that would not have been afforded to them just a few short years ago.

There is no better time to have your story told. The reason that self publishing has grown so much in recent years is a result of the ease to effectively get your book published in a professional manner for a fraction of the cost it would’ve cost in the past.
